Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson (born August 26, 1918) is a physicist and mathematician who made contributions to the United States aeronautics and space. Johnson worked at NASA’s Langley Research Center from 1953 to 1986. This mission was one of many in her long career working for NASA in moving space exploration forward, which included working on the space shuttle and Apollo. Her Flight Research Division worked closely with an engineering group called the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division (PARD), which specialized in rocketry. The Space Task Force and Manned Space Travel History began playing out right in front of NASA’s Katherine Johnson. NASA research mathematician Katherine Johnson did the trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s historic mission. Katherine’s work had made a powerful and direct impact on the real world.
